Guided/Directed Retreat

Is God calling you to spend some quiet time in prayer and reflection?  Would you like a place and direction to help you with this desire?  During this retreat, the group will gather daily for a conference.  Each participant will meet individually with one of the directors every day.  Join the monks for Mass and prayer.  Enjoy the Center with its beautiful grounds and artwork.

Renee L. O'Brien holds a Master’s in Ministry from Creighton University and was the Assistant Director of Creighton’s Christian Spirituality Program.  She has been a spiritual and retreat director for 22 years.

Sister Ann Marie Petrylka, OSM, has a Master’s in Pastoral Ministry and a certificate in Spiritual Direction from Creighton University.  She is a Pastoral Minister at St. Leo’s Parish, Omaha, and an experienced spiritual director.

Father Jim Egan, SJ, has worked as Servant Minister of the priests of the Archdiocese of Omaha and as a missionary in Uganda.  He is an experienced retreat director.

Father Thomas Leitner, OSB, holds a Master's of Religious Studies for St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO, and serves as administrator of St. Benedict Center.

BLOOM: Because Loving Ourselves and Others Matters

This retreat for mothers and their daughters, ages 11-15, provides opportunities for deepening the communication that is so essential for growth into mature womanhood.  Sessions will help connect faith, relationships and healthy loving in ways that are rooted in gospel teaching and relevant today.  A fun weekend, endorsed by the Family Life Office of the Omaha Archdiocese.  Includes, weather permitting, outdoor activities and a campfire. 

Kathy Martin, MA is an instructor at the College of St. Mary, and holds a youth ministry certificate. She frequently speaks to youth and parents about healthy relationships and sexuality.

Deb Waskowiak serves as a youth minister and presents workshops on healthy relationships, goal setting and sexuality for teens, young adults, and parents.

Debbie Sheehan, MA, is the Director of Formation and Education in Sexuality, Archdiocese of Omaha.

Enneagram Companions

This workshop will explore our Enneagram dynamics and those of others, communication issues we face, and themes that reoccur in relationship.  Spiritual directors and directees, spouses, family members, and business associates will find information that can deepen their self-understanding and lead them to greater sensitivity for the inner world of other people.

Sister Suzanne Zuercher, OSB, has offered workshops and retreats on spirituality throughout the United States as well as in Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Germany, and Wales.  She is a pioneer in the area of Enneagram spirituality and has authored three Enneagram books, including Enneagram Companions: Growing in Relationships and Spiritual Direction (Ave Maria).

The Ten Commandments: Signposts toward Freedom

When Christian monuments and historical symbols get removed from public places, the very Christian foundation of America is at stake.  The Ten Commandments mean to give orientation in our increasingly complex world and are God’s Words of wisdom that create a framework in which human life and human love can flourish.  This retreat will help to understand God’s great “Ten Words” as signposts toward freedom and to integrate them into our day to day living.

Father Thomas Leitner, OSB, holds a Master's of Religious Studies for St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO, and serves as administrator of St. Benedict Center.  He worked as a missionary in Tanzania/East Africa for six years.

Discovering the Treasures of Marriage: a Weekend for Couples

Christian marriage holds the treasures of faithful love, intimacy, mutual respect and friendship.  Everyday busyness and the challenges of work and family can keep couples from enjoying the treasures offered to them in a sacramental marriage.  This retreat focuses on (re-)discovering the gifts among the challenges.  It includes talks, prayer, couple time and fun, as well as Reconciliation and Sunday Eucharist.

Mary Jo Pedersen was on the staff of the Archdiocesan Family Life Office in Omaha for 25 years.  She presents workshops and retreats nationally on topics related to marriage and family spirituality, parenting and faith formation.  She has co-authored several books, among them, More than Meets the Eye: Finding God in the Creases and Folds of Family Life (St. Mary’s Press 2000).  Mary Jo writes for Catholic News Service in Washington, DC, has been married for 39 years and has three grown children.

Also presenting at this retreat are Laura Baum-Parr and Kory and Julie Delkamiller, experienced directors of marriage retreats.

Contemplative Prayer Retreat

"Contemplation is the perfection of love and knowledge" (Thomas Merton).  This retreat involves breath practice.  In contemplative prayer, we divest our minds of all thoughts and images in order to receive the pure and simple light of God directly into the summit of our souls.  A retreat for those who have begun the practice of non-conceptual prayer.  Please bring loose fitting clothing of neutral color.

Pilgrimage of Prayer with St. Paul's Letters

Pope Benedict XVI announced a jubilee year dedicated to St. Paul, beginning in June, 2008, to mark the 2,000th anniversary of the saint's birth.   This retreat will be a “spiritual pilgrimage” through St. Paul’s Letters and will include reflections on writings, spiritual direction, Reconciliation, Mass and adoration.  We will provide you with a journal for your “Pilgrimage with St. Paul!”

Monsignor Andrew J. Vaccari is the Chancellor of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, NY, and pastor of Queen of All Saints in Brooklyn.  He preaches retreats and days of prayer, and is active in the Pro Life Movement and in the Pro Sanctity Movement.

Teresa Monaghen,  the moderator of the Secular Institute of the Apostolic Oblates and the national director of the Pro Sanctity Movement, holds an STB in Theology from Rome and a MA in Christian Spirituality from Creighton University, Omaha. Teresa has 30 years of experience giving retreats and spiritual direction to people of all ages and backgrounds.

Our Christmas Pageant is a special highlight.  Schuyler Life Teen Members act out a story related to the Christmas message, which vividly brings home what this feast is all about.  Weather permitting, this event for the whole family is taking place outdoors, by the amphitheater and around the lake.  Afterwards, there is hot chocolate, cider and coffee, homemade Christmas cookies, and a Christmas story.

The Questions of Jesus

An effective question can surprise, stun, shock us, or provide us with an epiphany that effects lasting change in the way we act.  This seminar will focus on Jesus’ method of asking questions, which open up meaning and effect profound changes in people’s lives. 

Paul R. Welter, Ed.D., a licensed psychologist, has taught Psychology at the University of Nebraska/Kearney since 1968 and is a is a licensed psychologist and Life Transitions Counselor who works in private practice in Kearney, NE.   His six books include Counseling and the Search for Meaning (Word Books) His brief radio program, Learning from Children, is aired on 3 Midwest stations.

Learn how to avoid ministry burn-out, to understand work addiction, to create a vibrant health care plan, to explore your mercy life-line, to develop a life giving social network, to assess personal self-esteem and to receive God’s presence in everyday life.  Get to know the seven habits of the highly effective minister.  Retreat includes time for personal prayer and small group sharing.

Father William J. Jarema, M.S., M.A.S., provides workshops and retreats nationwide.  He is the founder and spiritual director of the Mercy Center for Healing the Whole Person, Colorado Springs, CO, as well as of the Society of the Missionaries of Mercy.  He has authored, There’s a Hole in My Chest: Healing and Hope for Adult Children Everywhere.

Embracing the Change that is Life: An Inner Journey Day for Women

When change enters our lives, life requires a response.  How can we learn to respond to change from love even in the midst of fear?  How can we bring faith to bear in the face of the unknown?  The structure of this day includes group sessions, as well as open times for meditating, walking the grounds, journaling, reading and private prayer.  This is not a preached retreat.

Mary Ann Warner of Hastings NE and Barb Byers of Omaha NE have each received professional training in spiritual direction and retreat ministry.  They have a unique ability to meet others where they are and accept them as they are.  This allows participants to return to daily life nurtured, renewed and energized in their personal relationship with God.

Letting in the Light: Living the Christian Mystery in Our Daily Lives

In the midst of a growing sense of darkness in our world, we need to gather together to let in the light.  The central Christian Mystery is an invitation to joy.  In this retreat we will share light from Scripture and science, from literature and laughter, from theology and the wisdom of our lives.  Practical and inspiring, this retreat will focus on the light that shines in the darkness, the Light that the darkness will never overcome.  

Patricia Livingston, a nationally known speaker and award winning author, is much in demand as a keynote speaker, workshop leader and retreat director.  She is best known for her touching, story-telling style of illuminating the presence of God in every day life.  Pat is a contributor to U.S Catholic, Living Faith and other periodicals.  Her newest book is titled, Letting in the Light (Ave Maria).

Wisdom of the Little Flower

St. Therese of Lisieux, sometimes affectionately called the “Little Flower,” will be our guide in this retreat.  We will explore her spirituality: her simple, child-like approach to God.  What is her message for our complex world?  In preparation for the retreat, it is helpful to read St. Therese’s autobiography Story of a Soul.

Sister Kathleen Courtney, OSB, is a Benedictine Sister from Yankton, SD, and holds Master’s Degrees in Art Education and Creation Spirituality.  She taught Art at Mount Marty College, presently offers spiritual direction and is an experienced retreat director.

Mary—Woman of Courage

Who is the real Mary? For many of us the real Mary remains hidden in the pages of the gospel. She is seen as a passive young woman consenting to do God’s will.  Mary’s story must be told in the context of 1st century Galilee.  In a very real sense, Mary is our example in our call to follow Jesus.  Get to know Mary in this retreat as a model of a courageous woman of faith.

Sister Mary Ann Schmieding, SSSF, is a School Sister of St. Francis.  She has a Master of Divinity from Aquinas Institute and is a trained spiritual director. As a pastoral minister for 29 years, she has conducted retreats, facilitated prayer groups, and has directed formation programs for groups of all ages.

Advent Retreat

As the winter wheat uses stillness and nourishment to bud forth new life, our hearts, nourished by imaginative scriptural prayer, can birth Jesus anew. The retreat comes from the Church’s medieval spiritual treasury to deepen our spiritual journey. 

Sister Elizabeth Fuhr, a Marycrest Franciscan, assists people in self-empowerment.  She studied at the International Franciscan School in Canterbury and has a Master’s in Christian Spirituality and Psychology.  She does spiritual direction, is a Colorado licensed marriage and family therapist and the author of, No Place to Stay: A Handbook for Homeless Outreach.

If you would like to attend one of the events on our calendar, fill out the
INQUIRY form. Scholarships are available for those in need. Nobody who would like to participate in a retreat should have to stay away for financial reasons. Please inquire.

Group Conferences
If you would like to bring your group to Saint Benedict Center for a workshop, retreat or meeting, please know that we welcome non-profit groups, churches, faculties, hospitals, civic and service organizations, human growth programs and businesses, which are compatible with our philosophy and our retreat environment. If you have a question or need for a meeting place, please contact the Center at 402.352.8819 from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Private Retreats and Spiritual Direction
We are always happy to make space available for individuals who need quiet time, a place away from the usual life and for those who want to seek God alone and in silence. Various priests of our Community offer the service of spiritual direction for those who are interested (suggested donation: $ 15/session). Please contact the Center to make an appointment.
